If you are new here, welcome! My name is Olivia, I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) here in Toronto, I've been in practice for 2 years, and in this time have conducted many first sessions with clients. Here are three things you can expect in your first session with me:
Reviewing The Consent Form
As your therapist, I will always review the consent form with you at the beginning of our first session, and obtain your informed consent. During this review, I'll go over the form itself, your right to participate in psychotherapy, the risks and benefits of psychotherapy, expectations for confidentiality, reviewing fees, cancellation policies and other relevant information.
Gathering Your History
In the first session, you can expect to be asked questions about your life! Some examples of questions I ask clients includes: what life was like for you growing up, what is life like for you in the present, your family history, any mental health concerns, life stressors, your support system, and any information you may like to share with me!
Setting Goals For Therapy
Typically in the first session we will explore what you're looking to gain from therapy; whether that's trauma processing, addressing anxiety or depression, exploring relationships, family dynamics, or simply having a safe place to talk. As your therapist, its important for me to support you in the way you need.
Now you know the three main things to expect in your first therapy session! I hope this is a helpful post, and if you are curious about starting therapy, click the link below to book in your free 15 minute consultation with me today!
